The second generation Transformer is here and it looks better, performs a lot faster and (probably the most important thing) it’s the first nVidia Tegra 3 tablet to go live. Let’s see the other specs!
The new Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is the second generation of a concept that sold very well around the world. The first Transformer introduced the idea one can be resourceful even with an Android powered tablet. The main difference between it and its rivals was the impressive docking station which came with a keyboard, battery, USB 2.0 ports and SD card slot.
The Transformer Prime has the same roots, but it has improved specs. First of all the looks are great – the plastic bits have been ditched and the design has been borrowed from the Zenbooks. So we’ve established the Prime is quite the looker, but the rest of specs are very good too.
It is the first tablet to come with the quad-core 1.4 GHz nVidia Tegra 3 processor (formerly known as Kal-El) and this really puts things into perspective. My laptop is powered by a dual-core processor and although overall it can do things a lot faster than a tablet it won’t be very long before tablets would overpass today’s laptops.
The display has IPS+ technology which in plain English means it’s better than the first generation one, on the back you’ll find an 8MP webcam with Full HD recording, the usual microHDMI port and microSD slot are still there and the battery life has been slightly improved to 12 hours.
Oddly Asus has axed the 16GB model, which means only the 32GB and 64GB models will be available. This being said the price for the cheapest Transformer tablet has gone up to $499 but it’ll still be better in terms of value for money. The tablet hits the market with Android 3.2 installed but Asus will push Ice Cream Sandwich to all Transformers when available.
As for the dock it too will get the same Zenbook makeover and while it loses one USB port it is a whole lot thinner and still keeps the SD card slot. With its battery the Transformer Prime should last up to 18 hours thus making it a perfect working tool for the entire day. The price for it has settled at $149.
