As you may or may not know, Dell laptops are divided into four categories: Inspiron, Precision, Latitude and XPS. Each of them is addressed to a specific kind of users, Inspiron is an average laptop, Precision is a workstation, Latitude is business optimized, and the XPS series are intended more as desktop replacements.
Dell has secretly updated the Inspiron series of laptops with five new models: Dell Inspiron 13R, 14R, 15R, 17R and M501R. The R stands for greater customization options than normal models. The 13R, 14R, 15R, and 17R are powered by Intel Core i3 or Core i5 processors.
Dell Inspiron 13R, 14R, 15R and 17R models have 13.3, 14, 15.6 and 17.3-inch displays respectively, Intel HD graphics by default and Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5470 1GB graphics as options. The can come installed with Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate, all 64-bit versions. They can fit up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, hard drives of 500GB and 640GB 5400rpm models along with extended wireless connectivity.
The most interesting model is Dell Inspiron M501R which comes with new AMD Phenom II X4 mobile processors, codenamed Champlain, expected for May 2010. AMD hasn’t officially announced these new processors but we know about them that unlike desktop models, mobile Phenom II don’t have L3 cache.
The AMD Phenom II X4 mobile series CPUs are quad-core processors with 1.8 GHz HT link, 4x 512 KB L2 Cache, fitted on Socket S1g4 and there are three models available:
- Phenom II X4 P920 clocked at 1.6 GHz, TDP 25W
- Phenom II X4 N930 clocked at 2.0 GHz, TDP 35W
- Phenom II X4 X920 BE clocked at 2.3 GHz, TDP 45W
Dell Inspiron M501R doesn’t has listed which one of them is it, but we know that it will be paired with Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics as default and with Ati Mobility Radeon HD 550v 1GB graphics if the customers choose it for an extra fee. Among other options for the M501R there is a 15.6-inch 720p HD display, a DVD burner that can be swapped for the optional Blu-Ray drive.
So far there’s no word about price, availability or shipping of these new laptops, but by the looks of it they may prove to be quite powerful in terms of sheer performance and usually pricing for Inspiron series are quite affordable compared with Precision, Latitude and XPS series.
