Intel Atom is a processor we all heard of and despite they relative low performance, they are best suited for netbooks because of their low power consumption and low price. The Intel Atom N270 and N280 powered netbooks since 2008 and recently were refreshed by Intel with the arrival of Atom N450 and N470. But because this market in a continuous move and with tactics changing rapidly, Intel is ready to release a new Atom platform code-named “Oak Trail” according to some rumors.
The Oak Trail processors may be intended to replace the existing Atom Z5xx series processors that right now are being used in mobile devices like the mini-laptop Sony Vaio P and Asus Eee PC T91MT touch-screen tablet. Intel Atom Z-series processors offer overall less performance than Intel Atom N-series processors, but they have their own advantages, like using even less power and having Intel GMA 500 graphics, which can accelerate HD video playback.
The new Oak Trail processors should consume less power than the old Atom Z-series or even Pine Trail processors. While Intel Atom Moorestown platform is intended to be used only in tablet PCs and smart-phones, OpenTablet 7 and LG GW990 for example, the Oak Trail processors will only be used to power Windows 7 netbooks.
