Intel Cedar Trail Atom CPUs go official

While Intel’s been talking for quite some time now about its Cedar Trail platform, it seems that the company has finally decided to go official with its new Atom lineup right as 2011 draws to an end, and 2012 gets ready to start fresh (with CES and its bonanza of new product launches, of course).

The new family comprises four new part numbers, namely two targeting specifically portable systems (netbooks, to be precise), while the other two are meant to power nettops or various other types of multimedia-oriented systems.

And, to be perfectly honest, it really seems that the new Atoms really have what it takes for multimedia crunching, given the fact that they come packed with a new media engine that allows for Full HD (1080p) video playback and Blu-ray support, as well as some pretty decent graphics (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600/3650 based on the PowerVR SGX 545 from Imagination Technologies).

As we pretty much expected, the Cedar Trail processors have been loaded with some of Intel’s best-known technologies, such as Rapid Start and Intel Wi-Di, while also supporting several display options.

Another interesting details is the fact that these CPUs incorporate two x86 cores and 512 KB of L2 cache per core, as well as four threads (with the exception of the desktop-oriented D2500). Plus, they’re built using a 32 nm process, which translates into lower power consumption levels.

As expected, the new Intel Atom Cedar Trail processors will find their way into a large number of new portable and desktop systems coming from a variety of manufacturers, but I guess that we’ll probably have to wait a few more days until CES 2012 comes knocking in order to see what’s what.
