Intel first intended to release its new CULV processors this summer, and then because some PC manufacturers stopped producing ultra-thin notebooks, made them to change their plans. Intel delayed its new CULV processors and didn’t dismiss that if there will be demand for them; they will be produced and sent to PC manufacturers.
Intel Celeron CULV processor will be arriving in Q3 2010. CULV processor is the acronym for Consumer Ultra Low Voltage processor and right now, this is version 2 of this powerful and power efficient processor. The new CPU is called Intel Celeron U3400 and is part of Calpella platform, based on the Arrandale 32nm core.
The Celeron U3400 runs at 1.06GHz, has a TDP of 18W, 2MB of cache, and support for DDR3-800 RAM. Graphics are part of the same package, but built on 45nm technology and can overclock from stock 166MHz up to 500MHz.
When we first saw the Core i5 520UM that is implemented on the new Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T, we thought that Intel’s new CULV processors will be like it. But Intel tagged it as Celeron therefore it can’t Turbo Boost at 1.86GHz like Core i5 520M which has 3MB of cache, compared with U3400’s 2MB of cache. This decision may improve battery life while being less costly, but also the hinders performance.
