Intel officially launches Pine Trail Atom N470 processor

Intel Atom N470 was first seen at CES as Lenovo’s S10-3t netbook CPU in September last year. The newest Pine Trail member N470 runs at 1,83GHz and by doing so is faster than its brother the N450 at 1,66GHz and the fastest Atom N-series so far. Like any other Pineview, the N470 incorporates the GMA 3150 graphics controller on the same CPU and has support for hyper-treading.

The Intel Atom N470 is expected to be used by OEM PC manufacturers in their latest netbooks. The performance gain is only on paper, the 10 percent frequency increase is hardly going to be observed in day by day usage or when used in CPU intense applications. The N470 netbooks won’t feel any faster than any N450 netbooks, not even because of the bigger ram memory available, increased from 1GB to 2GB.

Tests and benchmarks will give results in the same performance range, netbooks range. Because we all know, that performance isn’t coming from high clocked CPUs, but from CPUs with a much better architecture. The best example for this is the comparison between a Pentium4-M and a Core2Duo mobile. In the end N470 is a 10 percent overclocked N450, good to brag about, but unable to prove its superiority.
