MeeGo is a Linux-based software platform that will support multiple hardware architectures across a broad range of devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
Intel has demonstrated the new MeeGo OS at Intel Developer Forum (IDF 2010) in Beijing China this week and shows version 1.0 on an Acer netbook along with other devices such as HDTVs, smartphones and coupon machines, usually found in Chinese malls.
The first demo shows the MeeGo OS running on a netbook equipped with an Intel Atom processor. MeeGo OS 1.0 user interface is very similar (if not identical) with that of Moblin Linux. It has the same interface with lots of widgets, easy access to programs, email and others.
The second demo sows the MeeGo OS running on multiple platforms HDTV, smartphone, coupon machines and netbook. MeeGo for netbooks and smartphones has the same interface functionality, even if the smartphone screen is smaller than the netbook’s it still features a series of tabs to allows switching between activities.
A very interesting feature is the synchronization feature which allows you to watch a movie on a netbook and continue watching it on a HDTV or a smartphone, both running MeeGo. Also MeeGo is fully compatible with Intel’s AppUp Store. Very common in China are the coupon machines and if they run MeeGo you can use your smartphone to download coupons. See the demo’s for more info.
