Nvidia’s Next-Gen ION brings graphics and good battery time in one package

Nvidia unveiled the details of the next generation of the ION graphics chip for netbooks at CeBIT 2010. The first implementation delivered decent gaming experience on most of 11.6 inch netbooks who used it in 2009. Next generation of ION is doing much more than just offer bigger performance, check out its features described blow.

The first ION solution was designed to be used in large netbooks, whereas the new generation of ION will be used in 10 and 11.6-inch models. The 10-inch netbooks will get an 8 core chip and the 11.6-inch ones will get a 16 core chip. Performance of the 8 core chip will be similar with the one of the first Ion, while the 16 core will bring twice that performance. Both implementations (8 and 16 core) will feature HDMI-out.

The Next-Gen ION comes as a true discrete graphics solution with its own dedicated video memory and will have to prove the performance Nvidia is promising. The integrated switching capability allows users to have the best of both worlds, graphic power and long battery life with no compromise. Thanks to the Optimus technology the ION based netbooks will use the battery wisely. All Ion systems will come with Windows 7 Home Premium which will let users enjoy HD content without restrictions, even at fullscreen.

Nvidia states that the new ION based netbooks are very well suited for GPU-intensive tasks like video encoding and upscaling SD videos to HD. This means that anyone will be set to achieve great performance when using such a small portable for their own personal home videos, like Acer Aspire One 532g. The platform is also suited for either flash browser-based or online games like World of Warcraft (WoW) or Spore. The netbooks equipped with next-gen ION will be able to run any Flash 10.1 video thanks to its hardware acceleration.

The first next-gen ION systems will be available this summer starting with the 10-inch Acer Aspire One 532G and the 12-inch ASUS Eee PC 1201PN.
