Toshiba UK has just announced four new Satellite laptops that are due to be released later this year. The models are: the Satellite A660 (16-inch), Satellite L670 (15.6-inch), Satellite L650 (17.3-inch) and Satellite C650 (15.6-inch). All of them are based on Intel’s newest generation Core i-series of processors. They all come equipped with couple of multimedia features such as BBC iPlayer, Dolby Advanced Audio, and support for DLNA media streaming to network HDTVs.
Toshiba Satellite A660
Toshiba Satellite A660 is the top of the line model powered by Core i3, i5 or i7 processor. It has a 16-inch LED-backlit display with 1366×768 pixels of resolution, up to 8GB RAM, up to 640GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, Wireless, Bluetooth, webcam, dedicated Nvidia graphics with 1GB memory, HD webcam, and Windows 7 operating system.
The A660 is the first Toshiba notebook in the UK to feature Intel’s Wireless Display technology (IWDT). Users need to buy an IWDT Adapter and then connect it to the external display using a HDMI or composite AV cable. One drawback is that IWDT doesn’t support copyright protected signals such as HDCP (for Blu-Ray) or DVD movie playback. Another interesting feature is ‘Sleep-and-Music’ through the laptop’s eSATA/USB combo port, which enables a connected MP3 player to play music using the laptop’s Harman Kardon speakers.
The design of Toshiba’s Satellite A660 resembles that of its predecessor A500, but in a slimmer chassis and a black textured interior. It has a tiled keyboard with spaced keys, which should improve typing quite a bit and at the top of the keyboard we can find a set of multimedia controls. The A660 is due to be released this June and as of yet there’ no word about its cost.
Toshiba Satellite L650 and L670
Toshiba Satellite L650 and L670 are intended as “desktop replacement laptops”, although they’re specifications are inferior to those of the A660. They are equipped with Intel’s Core i3, i5 or i7 processors, a decent ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5145 graphics and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
The ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5145 graphic chip is a renamed 4570, so there’s no support for DX11 as its bigger brothers from the 5xxx family do. Also they don’t feature Blu-ray player, Bluetooth and IWDT capabilities. The design is similar to that of the A660, but with a glossy case. Toshiba didn’t reveal when these two notebooks would be released or what their price would be.
Toshiba Satellite C650
Toshiba Satellite C650 is the most affordable of the four new Satellite laptops Toshiba announced. The laptop has a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, Intel GMA HD graphics or an Ati solution (not mentioned which model), a choice of AMD, Intel Pentium or Core i3 processor, up to 4GB DDR3 of RAM can be fitted, up to 500GB of storage space and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity.
The C650 has a slim matte finish textured black case which houses a flat, full-sized keyboard with a dedicated numeric pad. Toshiba states battery life between four and five hours on a single charge. The expected retail price for the Toshiba Satellite C650 Series is starting from £350 or €400 (inc. VAT) when will be available later this year.
