Apple had so much success with the iPad that isn’t able to keep up with tablets demand, even though their manufacturers work around the clock. This situation is ideal for Chinese clones to thrive with their similar looking but under spec’ed tablets and PMPs.
Utopia Tech Company located in Shenzhen China has made a real iPad clone based on the Google’s Android operating system. Apple iPad has a 9.7-inch display with 4:3 ratio and a resolution of 1024×768 pixels, while Utopia’s clone has a 7-inch 16:9 display with resolution of 800×480 pixels.
The clone is powered by a “Rockchip” processor, probably Rockchip RK2808 chipset running at 600MHz. Even though this processor is no match for Apple’s A4 SOC, is still enough for HD 720p video playback including MKV (H.264/VC-1), AVI (XviD/DivX) and various other formats, but doesn’t have enough muscle for 1080p videos.
Its dimensions don’t look to be very much scaled down from the original despite his smaller display, has about the same thickness as iPad, only 14mm, and weighs 332g (about half the weight of Apple’s iPad). Utopia Tech’s tablet is equipped with G-sensor allowing the device to automatically rotate the display at 90 degrees.
To connect to the Internet the tablet has support for Wi-Fi, but doesn’t have support for any built-in 3G modules. It takes more than 20 seconds for the device to boot up, but after that the Internet experience is quite smooth. Android comes with rich software like QQ, MSN, GMAIL, Youku, video playback, PDF reading, and users can download more to meet their needs. No word about price and availability at this time as this device is still a prototype of Utopia Tech’s tablet.
